Sending Messages

Sending Directly to Another Station
After a message is composed, and a connection is established, the message can be sent to the destination station.

Response messages sent by a destination station when a connection is established depend on the greeting message programmed into the TNC at the destination station. Since each station may use a different greeting response FNpack cannot determine when a connection is established. However the originating station operator can determine when a connection is established by observing responses in the Receive Monitor panel. A message can be sent when it is determined that a connection has been established.   [Many stations use no greeting message so you can send your message as soon as you see the '***CONNECTED to ' response from the destination station.]

To send a previously composed Formal or Scratchpad message press the Send button on the Main screen.

If the message is being sent directly to another station (rather than to a bulletin board), and the Disconnect After Message Transferred option was selected when the message was composed, and the destination station is using FNpack, then the connection will disconnect as soon as the message transfer is complete. Otherwise the Disconnect button on the Main screen must be pressed after the message transfer is complete.

Sending to a Bulletin Board
When messages are being sent to a bulletin board a preliminary logon exchange must be done manually with the bulletin board before sending the message. After the message is sent an end-of-message indication, (either /EX or control-Z) must be sent to the bulletin board. The /EX may be entered manually or included as part of the message when the message is being composed. Disconnect can be done by pressing the Disconnect button on the Main screen but it is preferable to disconnect by sending a Bye command to the bulletin board.

After a Message is Sent
Composed messages continue to be available after they are sent so the same message may be sent to another station if desired. Changes can be made to the message by pressing the Edit Message button. The message may be erased by pressing the Erase Message button or by composing a new Formal or Scratchpad message.
