TNC Parameters

This screen is used to set parameters that FNpack uses when communicating with the TNC. There are three kinds of parameters: (1) Serial port data parameters, (2) Responses that FNpack expects to receive from the TNC, and (3) Commands that FNpack sends to the TNC.

The initial parameter values set by FNpack correspond to the factory default values used in most TNCs. If transmissions from the TNC appear garbled change the baud rate setting to match that of the TNC.

The full duplex / half duplex settings determine whether keystroked entered on the computer keyboard are displayed directly, or whether they are seen as echos from the TNC. The full duplex setting expects characters to be echoed by the TNC. This is the factory default setting for most TNCs. If your TNC does not echo characters, and therefore the characters you enter are not displayed, select the half duplex setting.

FNpack is initially configured to use serial port COM1. If this port is not available on your computer then select an available port.

In some cases partial words are used for commands and TNC responses as shown in the figure. This is consistent with the practice of certain TNCs. Many TNCs, such as Kantronics and MFJ, will accept both partial words and complete words. Therefore the commands and responses initially included in FNpack should work for most TNCs.

Command character value 03 corresponds to ascii character control-C. This is the character used to put most TNCs into the command mode.
