Tactical Callsigns Tactical callsigns are often used during emergency situations. Some packet nodes and TNCs impose limitations on the structure of tactical callsigns. For maximum compatibilty it is recommended that tactical callsigns consist of a single alphanumeric character string of fewer than 8 characters. Examples of acceptable tactical callsigns are Fire1, FireHQ, Sheltr5, and Mobile7. Police19 may be too long to be accepted by some TNCs. Multi-word callsigns such as Aux Unit 12 are unacceptable by most packet equipment and by FNpack. To use tactical callsigns the Operating Callsign entry on the Operating Preferences screen should be set to the tactical callsign. In addition the MYCALL entry in the TNC should also be set to the tactical callsign.
For Kantronics TNCs Only: If tactical callsigns are to be used with bulletin boards then Local BBS ID entry on the
Operating Preferences screen should be set to the tactical callsign plus the desired SSID
(for example Fire6-1). In addition the MYPbbs entry in the TNC should also be set to the tactical callsign plus SSID.
For MFJ TNCS only: If tactical callsigns are to be used with bulletin boards the
Local BBS ID entry on the Operating Preferences screen should be set to SYSOP.
The MYMCALL entry in the TNC should be set to the tactical callsign plus SSID
(for example Fire6-1). Tactical callsigns, and paths, for stations that you will be sending messages to may be entered in the Callsign List on the Connection Setup screen.
